This problems is so bad in Florida that the state has been singled out by the Feds, including the DEA, to confront this massive problem. We have had numerous clients from Pennsylvania and Ohio, that tell us how they would find cheap flights to Florida and would go every two weeks to refill their prescriptions for Oxicontin and other strongly addicting opiates. Between 2002 and 2006 there was a signifucant increase in the number of drug and alcohol treatment centers in Florida. The biggest increase were in for-profit private treatment centers. Out of 668 treatment centers, 228 offer residental care which is a very hig number compared to other states.

It seems that Florida became the place to go for treatment. It is very smart to really investigate he treatment center you go to or send a loved one to in Florida including when looking for a long term drug rehab center. I have spoekn to many people who have send their loved one to Florida for a 30 days program followed by half way housing only to have the substance abuser come back without much chnage and right back to use. Needless to say, many of these centers being for-profit were very expensive or drained insurance.Most of these programs offer a 30 day residential care program even though many people need a long term drug rehav center (90 days or more). Every one is generally treated the same, i.e. there is no variance in time based on the persons need.

State Funded Long Term Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services

The Single State Agency in Florida falls under The Florida Department of Children and Families. Their mission is dedicated to development of a comprehensive system of prevention, emergency/detoxification, and treatment services for individuals and families at risk of or affected by substance abuse; to promot their safety, well-being and self-sufficiency.

Most of the rehab services are provided by community-based organizations that contract with the Department to provide as many services as they can afford on their Block Grant funds, Unfortunately, that doesn't usually mean that you will find longterm rehab in Florida that is state funded. There are a few exceptions, but they are rare and are not programs that our staff would ever recommend. You can call the department and ask them for the names of the few long term drug treatment centers that they offer.
