The Alcohol and Drug Problems in Arizona

Arizona's drug abuse problem is approximately 2% worse than the U.S. national average. Being a border state and having the drug traffic from Mexico is one of the reasons for this increase in the incidence and prevalence of substance abuse in Arizona. Another important reason is a lack of effective alcohol and drug treatment programs. Because of the nice winter weather and the resort feeling of the area, Arizona has many "high dollar" treatment centers. Many of these centers started in the late 1970s and 1980s when private iinsurance was making residential treatment a very profitable business.

Close examination of these expensive treatment centers shows that most are based on the 12-steps of Alcohoics Anonymous and are traditionally 30-days or less in duration. As we have said in many areas of this site, 30-day treatment is many times ineffective and is actually a disservice to someone who is hoping to end their addiction. These centers believe that "relapse is part of the disease". This is a common attitude among treatment providers that have low successes. Relapse does happen, but it should't be seen as part of the plight of being a recovering addict or alcoholic. Relapse is inevitable if a person doesn't get everything that is needed to handle his problem, but effective drug rehabs do not hold this believe that it is part of everyone's outcomes.

Arizona does have a severe drug abuse/addiction problem, but as with most states, alcohol is the number one drug of abuse and addiction, causing the state of Arizona higher cost in human suffering and dollars. Phoenix has become a huge city in a considerablly short time, withlower property values enticing many to move from California and the colder states to enjoy the freedom of living in a less challenging environment. This rapid growth has caused multiple social problems, including a large incrase in drug trafficing and the issues that surround high drug abuse areas.

Finding Long Term Drug Rehab on Arizona

Many websites that help you find treatment programs tout that sbustance absue treatment is in great abundance in Arizona. As mentioned above, don't be fooled by the number of treatment centers, but look for the numbers of effective alcohol and drug rehab centers, and you will find that there aren't that many from which to choose.

Arizona is fortunate to have a very unique program in Sedona, Arizona. This program, Alternative To Meds Center (ATMC) handles persons that are usually not accepted in most alcohol and drug treatment facilities because of their addiction to psychiatric medications. ATMC uses the latest holistic treatments to help individuals get off of these highly addictive and debilitating drugs. Our staff has spent months working with this program and we have witnessed the tremendous changes that come from taking these addicted people off of the "medications" that either their famly doctors or a psychiatrist has prescribed. Once they are off of these type of drugs, those individuals with a history of being addicted to street drugs may attend another alcohol and drug rehab center, or in many cases, they may not need to after they have detoxed from these highly addictive prescription drugs. This program is so unique and so needed throughout the developed countries of the world, that ATMC is very busy and has clients who reside in many countries outside of the U.S.A. The environment at ATMC is a very relaxed and the clients learn many of the social skills that have been hampered by their being on psychiatric medications as well as relationship problems that they could have had before being placed on these drugs.

If you are someone you know if addicted to Xanax or any of the other addictive medications, it would behoove you to call our helpline counselors and ask them about Alternatives To Meds Center and we will do a thorough assessment to see if ATMC is right for you.

When someone has come to the point where they agree to go to treatment for alcohol and/or drug abuse, it is very important to find treatment quickly and we recommend long term drug rehab in almost all cases.

We have provided a list below of some of the long term drug and alcohol treatment centers in Arizona. Just beware that all we know that these centers offer is treatmnet that is more than 30 days. It is our recommendation that if someone has a fairly steady use and abuse of drugs or alcohol, they need to do treatment for 90 days or more. Otherwise treatment may have to be repeated which can be disappointing and even devastating for both the addict and his/her family.

It can be a bit of a jungle to find the correct treatment which is why we offer this free service of assessing the situation and recommending what is best in your particular situation.

You will see from out list below that there are a good amount of treatment facilities that say they offer long term drug rehabilitation. We do not know how many of them are truly long term drug rehab centers offering 90 days or more.

There are various types of treatment programs as well. One of the modalities we recommend the most is biophysical treatment. There is not a center on Arizona offering this type of treatment, so if that is what you feel may fit your situation the best, we will recommend a center in another state.

Resources in Arizona for Long Term Drug Rehab

In 2006, there were approximately 212 drug and alcohol treatment centers in Arizona. Only 53 if those offered any type of resindential treatment.

Every state has a "Single State Agency" whose responsibility is to oversee the licensing, funding and supervision of its alcohol and drug rehab programs. These agencies are usually under the supervision of the Health Departments and may include mental health services as well.

For those persons that need state funded programs, you need to be aware that the budgets for the Single State Agencies usually doesn't allow for the funding of long term drug rehab, but our counselors will find state funded programs if they are available and if you qualify under their income standards.

If you are seeking a long term drug rehab program that is low cost, you may be better off looking for faith based programs that are often funded through donations or through the church.

We also have long term drug rehab and alcohol treatment programs that have outomes that are approximately 8 times higher than state-funded programs and some of our programs have scholarships, so it is best that you contact us to find the best possible longterm program for your individual needs.
